Yeonjoo Cho

Drawing on her experience living between two cultures, Yeonjoo Cho creates paintings and installation pieces that explore themes of displacement and belonging. Her practice explores space and the threshold that both divides and connects inside and outside. Silk, her primary material, is used to reveal the tension between the opaque and the transparent; this contrasting effect expresses the artist's thoughts on the psychological distance and boundaries she experiences throughout her life. Her recent works have focused on the concepts of home and temporary dwelling, questioning the physical and psychological significance of residence for humans. These interests are reflected in her solo exhibition in Seoul, 《From This Room to That Room》 (UM Gallery, 2026), as well as in workshops and exhibitions conducted with various communities in the UK, such as the 《Home in Home》 exhibition and workshop series with a refugee art group in Glasgow (Transmission Gallery, 2025) and the 'To Thee' workshop with a Korean immigrant group in London (Kingston Museum, 2025).
Cho studied painting and art history at Ewha Womans University and completed her interdisciplinary PhD, integrating painting practice, art history, and postcolonial discourse, at the Glasgow School of Art. Her work has been exhibited at major art institutions across the UK and South Korea, including the Scottish Royal Academy, Edinburgh City Art Centre, Cambridge University, Cheongju Creative Art Studio, and Uijeongbu Art Centre.
두 문화 사이에서 살아온 경험을 바탕으로, 조연주는 이주와 소속감이라는 주제를 탐구하는 회화 및 설치 작품을 제작한다. 그녀의 작업은 공간과 내부와 외부를 나누는 동시에 연결하는 경계를 탐구한다. 주 재료인 비단은 불투명하고 투명한 것 사이의 긴장감을 드러내기 위해 쓰이며, 이러한 대비 효과는 작가가 살아가며 느끼는 심리적 거리감과 경계에 대한 상념들을 표현한다.그녀의 최근작은 작업은 집과 체류라는 개념에 초점을 맞춰 인간에게 있어 거주가 갖는 물리적, 심리적 의미에 대해 질문해왔다. 서울에서의 개인전, 《나의 방을 나눔합니다》(UM갤러리, 2026) 뿐만 아니라, 영국에서 다양한 공동체와 함께 진행한 워크숍 및 전시, 예를 들어 글래스고의 난민 예술 그룹과 함께한 《Home in Home》전시 및 워크숍 시리즈 (트랜스미션 갤러리, 2025), 런던의 한국 이민자 그룹과 함께한 'To Thee’ 워크숍 (킹스턴 뮤지엄, 2025) 등이 이러한 그녀의 관심사를 반영한다.
조연주는 이화여자대학교에서 회화와 미술사를 전공하고, 글라스고 예술대학에서 회화, 미술사, 탈식민주의 담론을 통합한 융합학 박사 학위를 취득했다. 그녀의 작품은 스코틀랜드 왕립 아카데미, 에든버러 시립미술관, 케임브리지 대학교, 청주 창작 센터, 의정부예술의 전당 등 영국과 한국의 주요 미술관에서 전시되었다.
